Why Pay $1299 For A New MacBook Pro, When You Can Pay $344

My 2012 MacBook Pro has been having some serious issues. My Apple Care has expired, and I was quoted $600 to fix. I thought I could take that $600 put it towards a new model.  After looking at all the models available I went with the 2015 MacBook Pro because it fit all my needs and has HDMI, USB, and Thunderbolt ports. The new models only have thunderbolt ports. I’m not buying a bunch of adapters. 2015 was retailing at $1300, so that still a lot of money for a new computer. I know there had to be a cheaper way, so I took the time to research.

I found out that most electronic stores carry a trade-in program where you choose which device you want to recycle. You can do start the process online or in-store. You’ll be asked a series of questions to determine the model of the device and the condition that it’s in. Based on those factors, you will receive a price. You will be paid in the form a gift card. It’s an easy way to get rid of unused devices without hurting the environment.

You would think that Apple has the best trade-in program. For me, that was not the case. Best Buy was extremely generous. Plus at Best Buy you can trade in a wide range of electronics outside of Apple.

I traded in my 2012 MacBook Pro and Ipad Pro that was collecting dust. Below are the results. Click the pictures to start the process.

Apple Renew & Recycle Program

2012 MacBook Pro – $261

Ipad Pro – $175

2012 MacBook Pro – $466

Ipad Pro – $303

I was happy to see that the MacBook Pro I wanted just dropped $250.  I took the trade in gift card valued at $769 and used it towards the purchase. I came out of pocket $344 with taxes. That’s a freaking steal!
